The Haiti earthquake disaster becomes personal

As you may know, my dad is part of the SA rescue team that left for Haiti last week Thursday. They got stuck in Brazil for a day and then waited in the Dominican Republic for another day. This delay was caused by the chaos at Haiti’s airport as numerous cargo flights had started offloading their aid on the runway. America soon took over the airport schedule and prioritized all rescue teams.

When the team finally arrived late Saturday evening, they were well rested and ready for action. Here’s the GOOD part: my dad, in assisting the US rescue team, actually recovered a live victim! An estimated 120 hours after the quake!

On a personal level, God has used this disaster to break open something new in my heart. In the devastation in Haiti, with thousands dead and their families’ grief, the broken-hearted tears we shed when a loved one dies, I realised that that is how God weeps for the lost! And as I thought about our rescue team, God reminded me of how we too are His rescue team. We have a purpose, an order: we have been in training for this, but how many of us are responding? Yes, God is good and He is in control, but He has not touched our hearts so that we can remain apathetic. There are many casualties of life, crying out for love and direction…

Thanks for reading, thanks for praying. I’ll keep you posted on the latest updates. In the meantime, here’s a picture from the team, moments before they left.

Much love
Katinka
