"The chief end of man is to worship God and enjoy him forever".
If this is our chief end and goal, then all else must fall under this headline. Enjoying ourselves only really happens as it is placed beneath enjoying God. Earning money, making business, building a family... all these things find fullness as outworkings of worship and fellowship with God. When we say (or think), "I'll take God and faith seriously once I've established myself financially and once the kids are grown", these things corrupt and become corrupters.
As for "church matters", the great commission to make disciples of all nations must be a result of worship and the joy of knowing God. It too must come under the Chief End. If not, it becomes idolatrous, destructive and unsustainable (how can we hope to influence a people without heavenly joy?). Church meetings are either an outflow of worship, a means of enjoying God, or they will do more harm than good. Where church life does not lead to worship, where preaching does not unveil Christ and expose idols, where freedom to enjoy God autonomously is not celebrated, then we have failed others in helping them discover and their Chief End. We would be guilty of setting up altars of administration rather than tents of meeting. There can be only two reasons for such folly - an uncrucified desire for self-righteousness and/or an uncrucified desire to fulfil ego needs by the pastor.
Let all we are and all we do come under such a glorious chief end - to worship God and enjoy Him forever. Surely in such a place all else finds either death or final satisfaction.
