“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing from the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17 (ESV)
I can’t imagine that reading the bible is boring. I don’t know where that notion comes from, but I usually find that it’s from people who have never really given it a try. When I come to His word daily, humbly, and by His Spirit, asking the author of this infallible word to reveal himself to me through His word, expose my heart and change me from the inside out, I find few greater joys and together with prayer, not a more worthy use of my time. To read God’s word in prayer, to trust that He will make Himself known as I read it is a part of my day that I do not ever want to live without.
We all pray for more faith, and we should. We pray that our faith be stirred, to which I respond that apart from God supernaturally adding to us a greater measure of faith, the answer is staring at us right from the word of God. I really don’t think that we can pray a prayer as follows: “Lord, please increase my faith but I don’t want to read your word.” Reading the word of God daily stirs and increases our faith. We get to know God through His word, and the more we know Him, the more we find that His attributes are magnificent to behold, His ways perfect and His character completely trustworthy. When I read the word I have fellowship with Him, I fill my mind with words that the Spirit of God reminds me of in time of need, I am reminded first hand of the promises of God, I am encouraged by the many saints gone before who walked with God, and for myself, the sweetest joy is to see Jesus, the Son of God on every page of scripture, Old & New Testament.
This bible reading plan, composed by the late Robert Murray M’Cheyne on December 30th 1842 has helped me to read more of the bible than I have ever set out to read in a day, and puts me into a rhythm of daily filling myself with a portion of scripture from various books in the bible. Included in this document is the actual letter that M’Cheyne wrote to His congregation when he compiled this reading plan and a short prescription of how to use it. I desire more of God’s word, and I can honestly say that it’s no longer just a dry discipline.
