Surgeon General Veejay Ramlakan on Friday announced that former president Nelson Mandela has been discharged from the Milpark Hospital to continue treatment at home.

“He recently developed an acute respiratory infection for which he received treatment and has responded very well. He is stable but will be monitored closely,” said Ramlakan.

Acting President Kgalema Motlathe said Madiba is well and receiving the best treatment from the top medical officials in the country.

"There is no need for us to fear for Madiba’s health, he is in good hands," said Motlanthe.

Motlanthe and the surgeon-general were addressing a media conference at the Milpark Hospital.

Madiba was admitted to the Milpark Hospital, in northern Johannesburg, on Wednesday 26 January 2011.

Meanwhile, learners at Qunu Junior Secondary said the former state president continues to be an inspiration to them.

Madiba was given the name Nelson when he attended the institution as a little boy.

The learners are among millions of people relieved to hear that Mandela will soon be returning home.

Many children at the school call Madiba their hero or just a superman.

Ten-year-old Nonkanyiso Dalisebe said their school and the village benefited a lot from government, thanks to Madiba.

She said today they have access to clean water, health services as well as free education.

Nonkanyiso along with her schoolmates say this has helped them become better citizens.
